EGF Affiliated expert Benyamin POGHOSYAN has been quoted by Italian magazine “La Repubblica”: “Even if the Nagorno Karabakh issue is now closed, there remain major obstacles to reaching a peace treaty. The Azerbaijani government believes that part of Armenia belongs historically to Azerbaijan and would like to take possession of it. […] A military attack is not unlikely but not certain either. What is certain, however, is Azerbaijani military supremacy, which in recent years has inflicted repeated defeats on the battlefields on Armenia. In the event of an attack,  no regional actor (with the exception of Iran which is experiencing great tensions with Azerbaijan) nor international actor is willing to defend Armenia militarily. Not Russia, which exports hydrocarbons through Azerbaijan that it can no longer sell to Europe. Not Western countries, some of which depend on Azerbaijani gas. Despite the political support that Armenia receives from the West, no one is ready to send soldiers there to defend it from possible attacks" concluded Poghosyan.
