Although Europe benefits from numerous experts on the geopolitics of the wider-European neighbourhood, EGF's founders detected a lack of continuous dialogue and healthy debate on European geopolitics in which non-EU expert opinions are effectively heard. In Brussels and other European capitals, the appreciation of geopolitics tends to be rather Euro-centrist or even Euro-Atlanticist in nature. Taking into account the current state of relations between the EU and some of the major countries lying on its borders, EGF's founders felt that the discussion of European geopolitics deserved the conscientious participation of stakeholders from outside of the EU. Thus EGF was founded in order to promote European policy makers' and other stakeholders' appreciation of European geopolitics from the perspective of the countries neighbouring the EU. As an independent web-portal, and due to its strong and wide network, EGF is able to spread geopolitical information from the EU neighbourhood, including the nearby regions of the former-Soviet Union, the Baltic and the Arctic, Turkey and the wider-Black Sea basin. Since 2011, EGF's geographic coverage is also expanding into the Euro-Med zone and the inter-connected Middle East.
