EPC Eastern Promises RoundTable - EU Energy Security & Turkish Energy Policy
It has become increasingly apparent that the EU needs to diversify its energy resources and supply routes and although there are a number of different options on the table, one of the most significant is the development of the Southern Energy Corridor from the Caspian region to Europe. In this respect, Turkey has a crucial role to play as the preferred transit state for any future energy project, including, of course, the much talked-about Nabucco natural gas pipeline making Turkey a vital partner for the EU in energy diversification projects. At the same time Turkey continues to develop and intensify its cooperation in the energy field with other partners including Russia with whom Turkey has increasingly strong ties. This roundtable will focus on recent developments in Turkey’s energy policy including its role in the Southern Energy Corridor, as well as looking at its energy relations with Moscow and possible involvement in projects such as South Stream which is often viewed as competition to Nabucco.
HE Selim Kuneralp, Head of the Mission of the Republic of Turkey to the EU will make the opening presentation. This will be followed by a panel discussion with a number of experts - Steven Everts, Member of the Cabinet of Catherine Ashton responsible for Energy Security, Nikolay Mironov an Expert at the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation and Birgit Schnieber-Jastram, Member of the European Parliament. The programme for the meeting is attached.
I hope very much that you will be able to join us. Please respond by return of mail.
