Port traffic, Baltic index signal slow shipping sector recovery

Port traffic for May has grown just 2.5% on a sequential basis, signaling a weak pick up in export-import activity. According to Indian Ports Association (IPA), the overall port traffic for May stood at 4.78 million tonne against 4.66 million tonne in April 2010.

UN Security Council slaps new sanctions on Iran

The UN Security Council voted in favor of new, tougher sanctions against Iran on Wednesday, scuttling a deal forged by Turkey and Brazil that would have let it exchange nuclear material for nuclear fuel from abroad.

NATO trucks attacked near Pakistani capital

Suspected militants have attacked a NATO convoy outside Pakistan's capital Islamabad, killing at least seven people. The convoy was carrying supplies for NATO forces in Afghanistan. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. But similar attacks in the past have been blamed on the Taliban.

Russia, Turkey, Iran meet ahead of U.S.-backed debate in United Nations

Leaders of Russia, Turkey and Iran convened at a security summit meeting in Istanbul on Tuesday in a display of regional power that appeared to be calculated to test the United States just one day before a scheduled U.S.-backed debate in the U.N. Security Council on imposing tighter sanctions over Iran's nuclear program.
