Obama, Hollande urge Russia to focus Syria attacks on Islamic State

U.S. President Barack Obama and French President Francois Hollande pressed Russia on Tuesday to focus its attacks in Syria on Islamic State militants after Turkey heightened tensions in the region by downing a Russian plane.

China says won't cease building on South China Sea isles

China said on Sunday it will continue to build military and civilian facilities on its artificial islands in the disputed South China Sea and the United States was testing it by sending warships through the area.

The United Nations voiced alarm on Friday about the fate of nine North Koreans feared to have been deported from Vietnam via China back to their homeland, saying they might face torture or even execution.

India warns of IS threat, tightens vigil at French, U.S. missions

India has warned of Islamic State using regional militant groups to mount strikes in the country, and has increased security around the diplomatic missions of the United States, France and Britain among others, a government advisory said.

Hollande pressed to amend foreign policy after Paris attacks

French President Francois Hollande is under pressure to change policy in Syria's civil war and work more closely with Russia after a wave of deadly attacks in Paris but he seems determined to stick to his guns and escalate military action.

Malaysian Deputy PM says must defend sovereignty in South China Sea dispute

Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister said the country must defend encroachment of its sovereignty in a veiled swipe at China's territorial claims in the South China Sea, as tensions flared ahead of a regional meeting that Beijing will attend.

U.S. bombers flew near China-built islands in South China Sea

Two U.S. B-52 strategic bombers flew near artificial Chinese-built islands in the South China Sea this week and were contacted by Chinese ground controllers but continued their mission undeterred, the Pentagon said on Thursday.

China says Philippines must heal rift over South China Sea as Indonesia speaks out

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the Philippines' case against China at an arbitration tribunal over rival claims in the South China Sea had strained relations and that it was up to the Philippines to heal the rift.
