Energy Security - National, European and Global Policy Perspectives
European Energy Policy is increasingly framed in security terms, where security interests seem to determinepolicy orientation. Scholars have taken note of the growing ‘securitization’ of energy and access to naturalresources. This workshop is driven by the question of how we should understand the need for a European EnergyPolicy in the first place. In order to answer this question, the workshop examines what role the EuropeanCommission plays in energy rich Eurasia – where the EU is confronted with an intricate power play alongsideRussia and China. At the same time, the focus shall be on the constraints the Commission faces in establishing aEuropean energy policy in practice and to what extent such a policy fits within an overall EU security approach. The second part of the workshop puts this analysis into perspective when several different scholars will broadenthe scope by focussing on how the Union’s policy can be evaluated from different academic perspectives, including legal, environmental and Russian studies.
