Instead, the US would be better served by supporting Armenia as it seeks to diversify its foreign and security policy without antagonizing Russia and appeasing Azerbaijan. The US should pressure Azerbaijan to prevent new attacks against Armenia and make more efforts to convince Turkey to restart the normalization process with Armenia without preconditions. EGF Affiliated expert Benyamin POGHOSYAN has been quoted by Italian magazine “La Repubblica”: “Even if the Nagorno Karabakh issue is now closed, there remain major obstacles to reaching a peace treaty. The Azerbaijani government believes that part of Armenia belongs historically to Azerbaijan and would like to take possession of it. […] A military attack is not unlikely but not certain either. What is certain, however, is Azerbaijani military supremacy, which in recent years has inflicted repeated defeats on the battlefields on Armenia. In the event of an attack, no regional actor (with the exception of Iran which is experiencing great tensions with Azerbaijan) nor international actor is willing to defend Armenia militarily. Not Russia, which exports hydrocarbons through Azerbaijan that it can no longer sell to Europe. Not Western countries, some of which depend on Azerbaijani gas. Despite the political support that Armenia receives from the West, no one is ready to send soldiers there to defend it from possible attacks" concluded Poghosyan.

EGF Affiliated Expert Benyamin POGHOSYAN published a new article with the “Armenian Mirror Spectator” on: “What Azerbaijan Wants and What It May Do Next”. He concluded that: “[…] Azerbaijan is on a clear path toward a new military escalation. In the current situation, one of the tangible tools to prevent Azerbaijan from sowing further instability in the region is the extension of the EU monitoring capacity in Armenia beyond 2022 and further discussions about the potential deployment of other monitoring missions (Collective Security Treaty Organization, Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe), along the Armenian–Azerbaijani border.” READ MORE

EGF Affiliated Expert Benyamin POGHOSYAN was interviewed by “World Geostrategic Insights” on Armenia’s disappointments with Russia and the CSTO. He concluded that although Armenia may have moral and legal grounds to leave or freeze its CSTO membership, she will not do so. This may significantly deteriorate relations with Russia, with possible catastrophic implications for Armenia, which now is under constant threat from Azerbaijan for another large-scale war. EGF Affiliated Expert Benyamin POGHOSYAN published a new article with the “Armenian Weekly” on “Azerbaijan becomes a new battlefield for Iran-Israel rivalry”. “The transformation of Azerbaijan into another Iran-Israel battlefield will negatively impact the already complicated Azerbaijan-Armenia negotiation process. The South Caucasus risks becoming embroiled in different conflicts, which only increases the involvement of external actors in regional geopolitics. […] Armenia should be cautious not to be seen as overtly anti-Israeli or pro-Iranian.” READ MORE

EGF Head of Research, Dr. George Vlad NICULESCU, co-edited a new volume on “Understanding Contemporary Information Landscape Handbook (UCIL)” with the Austrian National Defence Academy and the PfP Consortium of Defence Academies and Security Studies Institutes: “The idea of this Handbook sprang forth from a policy recommendation issued at a past Regional Stability in the South Caucasus Study Group (RSSC SG) workshop: “Create, with the assistance of PfP Consortium volunteers, a Reference Curriculum on Media Literacy, emphasizing the impact of modern communication techniques and social media on human biology, psychology and behaviour. The aim would be to raise awareness of the media as a tool of hybrid warfare, and how to build resilience to it at individual level.” Looking with an academic eye at the final product of our last three years of work I’d conclude that this Handbook is a great success as a valuable education tool for students and teachers in media studies, politics, international relations. EGF Affiliated Expert Benyamin POGHOSYAN published a new article with the Armenian Mirror Spectator
EGF Affiliated Expert Benyamin POGHOSYAN published a new article with the Armenian Mirror Spectator on: “The Prague Statement: Implications and Possible Developments”: “ Many in Nagorno-Karabakh believe that an Armenia–Azerbaijan peace treaty will have no concrete implications for them. The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic authorities will state that regardless of what the Armenian government thinks, they will never be a part of Azerbaijan and will never take Azerbaijani passports. According to this narrative, as long as Russian peacekeepers are deployed in Karabakh, Azerbaijan will not have the capacity to invade or use troops to force Karabakh Armenians to accept Azerbaijani passports or to leave. This logic has some right to exist. However, it might not function by the end of 2025. After a Armenia–Azerbaijan peace treaty with no mention of Nagorno-Karabakh, it will be difficult for Russians to justify their presence in Karabakh.” READ MORE

EGF Affiliated Expert Benyamin POGHOSYAN published a new article with the Armenian Mirror Spectator on “Why Azerbaijan Launched a New War and What Armenia Should Do”. In this article he concluded that: “The dilemma that Armenia will lose either Nagorno-Karabakh or Nagorno-Karabakh plus Syunik, and therefore it should choose the first option and lose Karabakh, is false. Any strategy based on this narrative will lead Armenia to complete catastrophe and sooner or later transform Armenia into a client state of the Azerbaijan–Turkey alliance READ MORE

He concluded that: “Armenia-Azerbaijan negotiations are approaching an impasse, and most probably, Azerbaijan will continue to use military escalations to force Armenia to accept its demands. EGF Affiliated Expert Benyamin POGHOSYAN has recently published an op-ed in “The Armenian Weekly” on “What the recent escalation in Nagorno Karabakh tells us about the strategy of Armenia and Azerbaijan.” Poghosyan concluded: “If Azerbaijani strategy is clear – to get maximum benefits from its 2020 military victory and to push as many Armenians from Nagorno Karabakh as possible – Armenia’s vision lacks clarity. […] The contradicting statements and actions by the Armenian government and the lack of clarity about the government’s strategy toward the future of Nagorno Karabakh create confusion among Armenian partners and allies. This confusion only strengthens Azerbaijani positions in the region and makes Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh more vulnerable to blackmail. READ MORE

Dr. George Vlad Niculescu responded recently a query on the prospects for Russian peacekeepers leave Karabakh after the expiration of their mandate
EGF Head of Research, Dr. George Vlad Niculescu, responded recently a query from an Azerbaijani journalist on the prospects for Russian peacekeepers leave Karabakh after the expiration of their mandate. He concluded that peace in Karabakh was rather hanging on the broader balance of power between Russia and Turkey, and it was becoming increasingly entangled with the ongoing Russia-West geopolitical confrontation. In such circumstances, Russian peacekeepers might need to stay in Karabakh beyond November 2025, as a key element of maintaining the local balance of power, and implicitly preserving regional stability and peace in the South Caucasus. EGF Affiliated Expert Benyamin POGHOSYAN has recently published an op-ed with The Armenian Mirror Spectator on “Protest Movement in Armenia and the Current Stage of the Nagorno Karabakh Conflict Settlement Process”: ‘Any efforts by international actors, be it Russia, the EU, or the US, to convince the Armenian government to agree to such a solution (i.e. Nagorno-Karabakh recognized as part of Azerbaijan) will inevitably trigger political destabilization in Armenia. These developments will only make South Caucasus more unstable and raise the probability of military escalation, creating another hot spot in post–Soviet space.’ READ MORE

EGF Affiliated Expert Benyamin Poghosyan has recently contributed a new op-ed on “There is still a chance Russia will be a spoiler in the Armenia-Turkey normalisation process” to commonspace.eu. He concluded that: “if Turkey changes its policy towards Russia, and joins the anti-Russian sanctions the situation may change. In such case, this may break the Russian – Turkish understanding for the post-2020 South Caucasus. Russia may assume the role of spoiler in the Armenia – Turkey normalization process, significantly slowing down the movement towards establishing diplomatic relations and opening up borders.” READ MORE

EGF Affiliated Expert Nick Chitadze recently published his thoughts on the possible development of Russian-Chinese cooperation
EGF Affiliated Expert Nick Chitadze, Director of the Center for International Studies in Tbilisi (Georgia), recently published his thoughts on the possible development of Russian-Chinese cooperation in the light of the sanctions imposed on the Kremlin and the likelihood of the outbreak of World War III. He concluded that: "For its part, in order to prevent any kind of cooperation between Russia and China, the West must maximize its relations with China and pursue a policy of "soft power." For example, Washington should resume talks with Beijing on reducing or abolishing tariffs on various types of Chinese products imported into the US, while the EU should facilitate the implementation of the One Belt-One Road and TRACECA projects as soon as possible". EGF Affiliated Expert Benyamin Poghosyan has published recently a new op-ed with “The Armenian Mirror-Spectator” on “War in Ukraine: Implications for Armenia”. He opined therein: “The immediate consequence of the ruined Russia – West relations will be the restricted flexibility of Armenia in its relations with the West. Yerevan should do everything not to cancel its relations with the Euro-Atlantic community, but it will be challenging, if not impossible, to keep the same level of relations. Armenia will also suffer economically due to the West’s economic war against Russia. READ MORE

EGF Affiliated Expert Nika Chitadze, Director of the Center for International Studies in Tbilisi (Georgia) recently published an opinion over how energy factors into the current stand-off between Russia and the West over Ukraine. He concluded that: “As a result of the export of energy resources, Russia manages to attract the financial resources that it uses for further military purposes. […] Western sanctions against Kremlin's policy should be primarily aimed at finding alternative ways to reduce global oil and gas prices, as well as the imports of natural gas from Russia. version.

EGF Affiliated Expert Benyamin Poghosyan has published recently a new op-ed with “The Armenian Weekly” on “Russia-West Decoupling: Implications for the South Caucasus”. He opined therein: “However, if the current Russia-West crisis ends with “complete decoupling,” it will shake the post-2020 Karabakh status quo. Azerbaijan will be forced to make a final decision. Is it part of the emerging Russian pole or not? Turkey will not be able to continue its current “cooperative competition” with Russia. Georgia will not join the “Russian pole” as an absolute majority of Georgian society views Russia as an enemy and occupying force.”
